Blackjack basic rules

If the total value of the player’s cards is closer to 21 than the dealer, the player wins as much as he wagered. If the player has Blackjack, he wins 3 to 2 ,as long as the dealer does not also have Blackjack.

If the total of the player’s cards exceeds 21, he “busts” and loses his wager. If his cards total the same number as the dealer (from 17 to 21), no one wins and the player receives his wager back. This is considered a “push.” Keep in mind that “Blackjack” beats a score of 21 consisting of 3 or more cards. Blackjack is achieved when your first two cards total 21.

If the player has a hand that consists of a 6 and an Ace, he may either consider it at 17 or drop its value to 7. The Ace may count as 1 or 11. You may change the value of the Ace as the hand progresses.

Tha Dealer is not allowed to hit on a soft 17 (at most casinos but this may vary from casino to casino depending of the casinos blackjack rules).

All hands which contain an ace valued at 11 are considered “soft” hands (i.e. A6 is a soft 17). Hands containing an ace valued at 1 are considered “hard” hands (A, 6, K is a hard 17).

Prior to receiving any cards, the player must place a wager. Once the wager is made, the player is dealt two cards face up. The dealer is also dealt two cards, one facing up and one facing down. The dealer’s card will remain face down until the player has completed his hand.

The dealer then turns over his card. The dealer continues to draw cards until his total is greater than 16. At most casinos the dealer must not draw another card if his hand is a soft 17. The player wins if the dealer goes over 21 ("Busts").

Deal

Clicking on the deal button after placing a bet starts a new game.

Hit/Stand

Clicking on the hit button will deal the player an additional card. Clicking on the stand button will keep the player’s hand at its current value.

Split

If the player’s first two cards are of the same value (i.e. 7, 7, or Q, K) he may split them into 2 separate hands, placing a second wager of equal value. The player then proceeds to draw cards as usual, at some casinos with these exceptions:

If a player splits two aces, he receives only one additional card for each hand. A hand totaling 21 after splitting aces is considered 21, not Blackjack.

Double

When a player has been dealt two cards and believes that a third card will give him a position to beat the dealer’s hand, he can “double.” His wager is doubled, and he is allowed to hit and receive just one additional card.

Insurance

Insurance gives the player a chance to protect himself when he believes the dealer might have Blackjack. If the dealer’s first card is an ace, he is considered to have a fair chance of getting Blackjack. If the player believes the dealer’s hole card (face down) value is 10, the player may purchase insurance against dealer Blackjack at the price of half their initial bet. If the dealer does have Blackjack, the insurance pays 2 to 1, which corresponds to the amount of the initial bet. If the player has bought insurance and the dealer does not have Blackjack, the player loses his insurance. The player’s initial bet is then settled by comparing his cards with the dealer’s. If the dealer and the player both have Blackjack the game results in a push.

How to use our Blackjack strategy table

To use the strategy you need to look up your hand in the vertical column in the table below as well as the dealer’s hand in the horizontal column. In boths colums an A stands for an Ace. At the top of the vertical table, you will find the hard combinations (e.g. 10/6 = 16) followed by the soft combinations (e.g. ES/5 = 16). Small variations of the rules may have an influence on the borderline cases.

Use the table to learn a simple and easy Blackjack strategy that will perfect your basic blackjack skills:

Blackjack

We have kept out all the obvious situations - if you have 8 or less you always want to take a card. If you get 17 or more you always stand.

If you want to learn the blackjack table by heart, you should try to remember the patterns of the table. You should also think about why the table suggests that you should stand instead of hit. Think about why you should never split 2 tens even if the dealer may have a 5 as is open card. The reason is that there is a big possibility that you will win with your 2 tens (total 20). On the other hand, if you split the tens, the risk that you will lose at least one of the hands is very big (you will maybe get another 5 as your second card). If you lose a hand and win another, it’s a tie between you and the dealer. If you had decided to stand, you would have won the hand. That’s why you should never split 2 tens.

Blackjack Variants

Atlantic City Blackjack - Introduction

The rules in Atlantic City Blackjack are very similar to the original Blackjack rules, with a couple of differences. The more important one is that Atlantic City Blackjack is played with 8 standard decks of cards (without any joker).

The dealers cards

In Atlantic City Blackjack the dealer starts with 2 cards. One card face-up and one card face-down. This means that if the card facing up is an ace or a 10, the dealer must check for Blackjack. If the dealer has Blackjack, you lose – unless you also have blackjack (push). This means that your risk of losing is smaller, because you are not betting against a possible blackjack.

Surrender

In Atlantic City Blackjack you have the possibility to Surrender, which means you give up your chance of winning the round, which costs you half of your bet (you get half of your bet returned).

Specific rules in Atlantic Black Jack:

• Dealer gets 2 cards and must check for blackjack when the face up card is either an ace or a 10.

• The game is played with 8 sets of standard decks of cards.

• Dealer must stand on soft/hard 17

• Double on all 2 cards of the same value

• Double after Split

• You can split 3 times (4 hands).

• Aces can only be split one time.

• You only get one card when you split aces (pr. Ace)

• If you split 2 aces or 2 10’s and player gets one or more hands with A-10, they don’t count as BJ, but only as 21.

• A hand with two cards, with the value of 10, can be split (whether it is 10, J, Q or K)

• Surrender is allowed

Blackjack Switch - Introduction

Another popular version of Blackjack is Blackjack Switch. This version of the game allows players to play with two different Blackjack hands and swapping cards between two hands.

If you play Blackjack Switch you must bet the same amount on both hands, as mentioned, you can swap your second card around between your hands. If you get 5 and 3 in your first hand, and 7 and 6 in your other hand, then you have two hands with the value 8 and 13 Especially the value 13 is not optimal, but if you swap around with your second card, you'll suddenly have a combination called 5 +6 and 7 +3, which is a much better starting point.

Double Exposure  Blackjack - Introduction

Double Exposure Blackjack is a relatively new blackjack variant which most certainly does not make the game more tiresome. You will usually find Double Exposure Blackjack at online casinos, so do not count on playing it at a traditional casino. At online casinos you may also encounter the game played under names such as Face up 21 or Dealer Disclosure.

The big difference between Double Exposure Blackjack, and the classic game of Blackjack is the dealer's cards is displayed "face up". This may seem as an advantage for you, but it should not be too easy for you, there are other rules that eliminate the benefits.

You will discover for instance that all so-called "ties" that occur in the game will always be won by the dealer. In the case of both you and the dealer has a Blackjack, it is the player that wins. Furthermore, eight decks of cards are used when playing Double Exposure Blackjack, which obviously affects your chances of receiving the right card.

European BlackJack - Introduction

This may come as no surprise, but European Blackjack and the classic Blackjack are very similar to each other. Both you and the dealer are aiming to get as close to 21 as possible without the value of the cards exceeds 21.

So there are only small differences in European Blackjack and the classic game of Blackjack, but the most obvious difference is that the player plays his hand all the way through before the dealer is doing anything. Therefore, the dealer does not get Blackjack right away which modifies the player's strategy to win. In a classic game of Blackjack the player are for example, offered "insurance" if the dealer's face up card is an ace before the dealer sees if he has Blackjack. In a game of European Blackjack the player may continue to hit, split, double or stand, thereby raising the value of the bet before the dealer checks if he has Blackjack. If the dealer has Blackjack, the player loses all bets, and not only the initial bet, which would be the case in a classic game of Blackjack.

Another challenge you will face playing European Blackjack is whether you should make split bets or not. The absence of the dealer's hole card is a threat to you if you split your cards. While the odds of a straight Blackjack is low, the player could risk losing double his initial bet if his split hands in the end is beaten by a dealers blackjack.

The rules for doubling are also unique in European Blackjack. The players are only allowed to double at hands with the value 9-11, but then again, players are also allowed to double after a split.

Europan Blackjack is played with several decks of cards. The most common is 4-8 decks of cards. The value of the cards are the exact same as in a classic game of Blackjack.

Vegas Strip Blackjack - Introduction:

As with all other Blackjack variations this variant also follows the usual blackjack rules, but nevertheless there are a few details that make the game a little bit different than the classic version of the game.

Vegas Strip Blackjack is played with four decks of playing cards with 52 cards each. In Vegas Strip Blackjack, you have the same chances as in "ordinary" Blackjack, except that you cannot Surrender. Besides this you should be aware that Vegas Strip Blackjack is a so-called American Hole Card game where the dealer checks whether he has blackjack or not, if he that the game is over.

Also note that in Vegas Strip Blackjack it can be a good idea to split your hand if the cards are of the same denomination or point value. Additionally, you can divide your hands three times, and get up to four hands this way. Aces can only split once. If you choose to split an ace, you can only receive one card after the cards have been split.
