Danish censorship on the way

  Sunday, June 28, 2009

During the last years the European Commission has been at war against several European countries because of the protectionist gaming laws. The European Commission have tried to solve the matter by negotiating with the individual countries, but only half of the countries have agreed to the terms set from the EU Commission, the rest are facing legal threats and some have already been to court for non-compliance with the laws that secures the free movements of services with the EU. Denmark has shown to be one of the stubborn countries, which continues to ban foreign casinos and the country is now looking in to the matter of blocking the casinos on an ISP level. This practice has only been seen in countries like China and North Korea, not exactly countries anyone would like to be associated with.

The attempt to block the traffic to online casinos are considered to be hypocritical by many in the industry and the casinos are outraged by the fact that they may be compared to much worse things like child pornography. This distinction seems to be very unfair for the online casinos and they are doing everything they can to prevent this from happening. If the government crosses the line and agrees to block foreign online casino sites, but still allows the state monopoly, there is an extremely hypocrital nature to the legislation that does not bode well.

The comparison to China and North Korea shows that the Danish government runs the risk of being overly controlling about the citizens privacy and right to choose for themselves. The Danes could face some serious censorship of the content on the internet if this passes through and actually happens. If the blocking is initiated the online casinos are prepared to take the Danish government to the European Supreme Court. Besides the online casino industry, the European Commission is also working hard to stop this from happening.
