The main event in this years Main Event in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) was Monday sold out and hundreds of disappointed players had to accept that they would be getting a shot at the record sized first prize in the Main Event. The tournament was able to squeeze in 2809 players at the jam packed Rio before closing the registration to day 1D. The decision to stop for more registrations caused some frustrations among the turned down players. The three previous Day 1 fields did not count as many players as Day 1D did and the players could have chosen to play on one of those days. The field of Day 1A counted 1116 players, Day 1B had a field of 873 players and Day 1C had 1696 entrants. The WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack apologized to some of the rejected players and said the following to them: "We are sorry and I'm sorry," and he continued to say that the top priority for the tournament next year, but this year it was not possible to accommodate more players. Anyone in the Amazon Room at the Rio would understand that it was not possible to take in more players than the 2809 players on Day 1D, but the lesson for all poker players must be to be in Las Vegas a few days before Day 1D if they want to make sure that they have a spot in the Main Event. In the casino slot machines where moved to accommodate more players at the casino floor near the restaurant. There was simply not anymore space for the staff to handle all these players. The total field of players in the 2009 Main Event ended on 6494 entrants compared to the 6844 players in last years Main Event and there will be cash prizes for 648 players, with a first prize of $8,546,435. The player that finishes on 648th place will take home $21.365. Any player at the final table will be guaranteed to win at least $1.263.602.
